Indian defence Public Sector Undertaking (PSU), Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineering (GRSE) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Bangladeshi Government owned and Bangladesh Navy operated Khulna Shipyard (KSY) to help KSY with design and construction of warships... ...
Indian Minister of State for Defense Subhash Bhamre informed the Indian Parliament in a question answer session on July 25th that KSY “had earlier expressed keenness to develop its skills and know-how for design and construction of ships at its facility at Khulna and other subsidiary locations …”
A senior GRSE executive told Jane Defence Weekly that the MoU, which was signed on 8th May, was preceded by several rounds of “detailed discussions” between representatives from the two shipyards accompanied by senior government, defense, and naval officials from both countries.
This comes after a visit from Navy chief Admiral Sunil Lanba who visited Bangladesh in June, when both sides explored new avenues for cooperation and also instituted a joint patrol with Bangladesh Navy, Coordinated Patrol (CORPAT), which will be an annual feature.
Beforehand, Bangladesh Navy procured two diesel electric submarines from China.
